2. Do I have to be a resident of the City of Brookfield in order to apply for a position?

The City of Brookfield does not require job applicants to be City residents.

3. When will I be notified regarding the status of my candidacy for a City position?

All applicants for City position vacancies are notified as to their status at every step of the recruitment process. This notice is typically made through the U.S. mail. Consequently, applicants are encouraged to keep the Human Resources apprised of any changes to their contact information. Some recruitment processes may take more time than expected – all applicants should assume they are still under consideration by the City if they have not received notice to the contrary.

4. May I submit a resume or fill out an application and be called when something opens up in my field?

Unfortunately, the City can only accept application materials for announced job openings during the recruitment timeframe indicated in the job announcement.

6. How long are applications kept on file?

In general, applications are maintained for at least two years, unless the City elects to initiate a new recruitment process for the same title. In such instances, applicants are asked if they would like their application materials evaluated for the subsequent vacancy, and if so, the extent to which the materials should be updated.

7. How do I become a City of Brookfield Firefighter?

The City recruits for the position of Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician when it anticipates the need to fill vacancies. The initial step in the process for applicants is to apply for the position during our recruitment timeframe, which is posted on this website, at the Current Job Opportunities link, whenever it occurs.

The current minimum qualifications for the position of Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician are 60 college credits, or an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science; Certification as a Firefighter II; Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician; a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License; and, availability to work a 24 hour rotational shift.

The selection procedure consists of a physical ability test, written examination, job trait assessment, background check, drug screen, and oral panel interview. After this process has been completed, pursuant to City of Brookfield Police and Fire Commission Rules, successful candidates are placed on an eligibility list in rank order for hiring interview consideration.

8. How do I become a City of Brookfield Police Officer?

The City of Brookfield participates in a consortium of similar communities for purposes of police officer recruitment. On a regular basis, the consortium recruits police officer candidates for Waukesha County police agencies, including, the City of Brookfield, the City of New Berlin, Village of Pewaukee, and the Village of Elm Grove. 10. Does the City have any opportunities for persons under the age of 18?

All City of Brookfield full-time opportunities require being at least 18 years of age. The City has part-time seasonal positions, primarily in the Parks, Recreational and Forestry Department suitable for 16 and 17 year olds. 12. What type of pre-employment requirements does the City have of an applicant before hire?

All City of Brookfield offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate passing a pre-employment physical examination, criminal background check, and drug screen. Certain higher level positions may require passing an extensive background check and a job trait assessment. 13. If I have a family member already working for the City of Brookfield, can I still apply and be considered for employment?

Yes. However, the City prohibits the appointing authority (hiring manager) from participating in a selection process in which a family member is an applicant.

17. If I applied for a particular position in the recent past and I notice it has re-opened or is being re-advertised, do I need to re-apply in order to be considered?

No. The City evaluates all applications for a particular recruitment, and all applicants are notified of their status during the process, irrespective of when they were submitted. On rare occasions, the City may choose to terminate a particular recruitment process in favor of a new one. In such cases, all applicants are notified and asked if they would like to continue in the new process, with an opportunity to update their application materials.

18. Does the City of Brookfield have a residency requirement for its employees?

Residency within the City of Brookfield within one (1) year of appointment is required for the incumbents of the positions of Police Chief and Fire Chief. For all other employees, residency is encouraged, but not required.

19. How do I go about reporting misconduct on the part of a City employee?
