Recycling Paint

  • Dry out latex paint.
  • Remove the lid and let paint dry in the can or brush paint in layers on newspaper or cardboard. For larger amounts of latex, mix paint with cat litter, sawdust or sand in a cardboard box lined with plastic and let it dry.
  • Throw the dried paint, cans and other materials in the trash.
  • Leave the lids off paint cans so trash collectors will see that the paint is dry and accept them.
  • A new product, “Waste Paint Hardener” is available at most area hardware stores. It hardens latex paint in minutes rather than days. For further information: Latex Paint Disposal
  • Oil-based or solvent-based paint should be dropped off at the hazardous waste collection site.
