[ARCHIVED] Recycling Just Got Easier

Beginning January 1, 2015 Residents Can Place All Recyclables in One Container

The days of separating recyclables will soon be over! Beginning January 1, 2015, paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and cartons all go in the same container. Since 1991, Waukesha County has operated a “dual sort” recycling program, for which residents in the 25 communities that participate in the program must separate paper and cardboard from bottles and cans when these materials are set out for collection in blue bins. Recycling just got easier!

Brookfield's waste hauler will deliver new, larger recycling containers to each home and all recyclables will go in those containers, mixed together. It’s called “single sort” recycling. No sorting. No hassle. These new recycling containers can hold from two to five times more recyclables than the current blue bin and more types of materials can be recycled in this new single sort program. With the convenience of not having to sort and more materials being accepted, this should lead to significant increases in recycling rates which is projected to be 25 percent or greater. The increase in recycling materials accepted also means less waste going to the landfill, which saves taxpayers money.

Waukesha County and the City of Milwaukee partnered to construct a new single sort materials recycling facility. This facility will be processing all of the recyclables collected from residents in the communities participating in the Waukesha County recycling program.
