[ARCHIVED] Expansion of the Collaborative Joint Response Area with New Berlin

Dear Citizens and Business Owners,

In December of 2012, the City of Brookfield and the City of New Berlin Fire Departments began a collaborative, borderless response between New Berlin Fire Station, located near Elm Grove Road and Greenfield Avenue, and City of Brookfield Fire Station on Calhoun Road and Greenfield Avenue. This program was developed to take advantage of station locations for the purpose of improving response times by assigning the closest personnel and vehicles to emergencies regardless of the community boundary. We are now expanding the joint first response area to include the area north of I-94 to properties south of Bluemound Road and east of Rosedale Drive to 124th Street.

An emergency occurring within Brookfield’s joint response area includes a response by the City of New Berlin’s Firefighter/Paramedics. Arriving first, they will initiate medical care or mitigate an emergency, whether fire suppression or hazard removal, then transfer care or operations to later arriving City of Brookfield’s Firefighter/Paramedics. Both departments work collaboratively to deal with the emergency. The same occurs for emergencies occurring in the New Berlin’s joint response area. This joint response allows both departments to provide quicker responses to fire and emergency medical incidents in both communities without any increases of responding personnel or vehicles.

To date, the program has accomplished the goal of reducing the amount of time it takes for properly equipped and trained professional Firefighter/Paramedics to arrive to an incident. The program has been a win-win for both communities by providing expedient and seamless emergency services.
New Berlin and City of Brookfield’s Fire Departments regularly train and work together at fires and other emergency incidents, as well as providing each other with additional resources during periods of high call volume. This program is our attempt to offer an innovative approach to provide borderless and collaborative fire and emergency medical services from both fire stations located on Greenfield Avenue.
