1. What is the hardness of my city water?

The hardness of the Brookfield city water averages approximately 23-34 grains.

2. How much fluoride is in the city water?

The City does not add fluoride, it naturally occurs in the water. The average is 0.4 milligrams per liter.

3. How is the city water treated?

The city adds a minimal amount of chlorine to destroy bacteria. The water is also treated with a polyphosphate, which is a corrosion inhibitor. The utility also provides iron filtration to reduce the iron content at some of the wells.

4. Do I still need a water softener if I am on city water?

Most people do choose to keep their softener once they connect to city water.

5. Why do I have rusty water?

Discolored water can be caused by many things. Check the unsoftened water in the home closest to the point of entry, this would be indicative of the water the utility is providing from the main. Any water in the home that is treated and discolored, would be an internal plumbing concern. There could be a disturbance in the water system (hydrant flushing, new water main construction in the area, illegal use of a fire hydrant). Combination plumbing (copper and galvanized) in your home can also cause the problem.

6. Why do I have low or no pressure?

Pressure problems can be caused by many things. Make sure all valves are fully open in the home, especially after plumbing changes have been made. If it is isolated to a particular sink, clean the aerator at the end of the faucet. If you have a water softener, try bypassing the softener and see if that increases pressure.
